“What do you mean ‘was’?” The shrewdness in her mother’s tone suggested she already had a good idea of what had happened. Scarlett wasn’t well known for sitting idly by.
“He was bullying Isaiah so I told him to stop.”
“Tell me he at least didn’t recognize you,” Ruby said.
“He knew who I was if that’s what you mean.”
“Oh, fairies. Scarlett, Ethan is a terrible and dangerous man,” Ruby said.
“Everyone says that like I should know who he is.”
Ruby made to respond and then stopped, exhaling slowly and dropping her head slowly. Her hands spread in front of her, a sign Scarlett knew she was weighing her options before her mother looked up at last, the tiniest, pained smile on her face.
“You remember that wolf attack, twelve years ago?”
“It’s hard not to. The scars are still there.”
“Ethan is the one who sent that wolf to attack you.”
